The new SpreadsheetConverter version 9

Your charts come alive with interactivity, flexible layouts and color customizations. The WordPress plugin makes it super easy to publish your calculator to a WordPress blog or website. With Node.js, Secure Login lets you control who can access your calculator.

Data Validation support lets you validate your forms also with custom formulas – you never have to receive an incomplete or invalid submission. Just define the rules for data validation in Excel and we’ll make sure the same validations are performed by the converted web page.

The Stepper widget allows easy input of numeric values with just a tap or click on a button. Very handy when your visitors need to input a small-range number.

Version 9 organizes the widgets in new and more comprehensive widget categories.

The Worksheet, Workbook and System settings have been redesigned to make them even easier to understand and work with.

Interactive charts

Version 9 takes Charts to a new level where your charts are not only dynamic but also interactive. The direct interactivity helps your users to quickly understand the charts and analyze the underlying data in a fun way.

The interactions allow users to focus on the series they are interested in: hovering on a legend highlights the series it represents; clicking on the legend shows/hides the entire series.

The new Interactive Charts also support more flexible layouts – with/without axis, legends on top/bottom/right etc. They’ve got new capabilities like support for logarithmic axis and data labels. We have added support for custom solid colors in the chart area, legend, axis labels and grid-lines so you can give them a look that matches with your website theme.

WordPress plugin

Here are good news for users with a WordPress blog or website. Our new WordPress plugin makes it super easy to publish your calculator on the web with WordPress.

SpreadsheetConverter creates an SSC package file that contains the form or calculator. Open the plugin in WordPress and upload the SSC package file. Now your spreadsheet can be embedded in any page or post in WordPress.

You can do everything in the editor’s visual mode – embedding the calculator, adjusting its size, removing it – there’s no need to work directly with the HTML.

The plugin is not yet available via the public WordPress plugin directory, but you can download it from our website.

Node.js Secure Login

Secure Login for the Node.js flavor lets you control who can access your calculator. This adds an additional layer of protection around your calculator. The first screen users see is a special login page. Your actual calculator page is hidden. Only authorized users with a valid password can view your calculator.

The administrator can create and delete user accounts directly from the simple menu inside the same calculator. This means the administrator can manage the calculator’s or form’s users at any time, from anywhere.

All login credentials are securely stored in a database file using industry-standard encryption technologies.

One of the best things about Secure Login is that you do not need to configure anything on your local PC or on your Node.js web server. It just works!

Data Validation

One of the most important aspects when you work with electronic forms is to ensure that the form contents are correct and that the form is completely filled out. With SpreadsheetConverter, you can perform most of these validations before the form is submitted, with the user still available to correct any errors.

The new Data Validation support lets you define validation rules for your forms using standard Data Validation rules in Excel. You can check that a numeric value is within a certain range, or set ranges for allowed dates and times. If your needs are complex, you can even apply your own Excel formula to perform the validation. The rules you define in Excel are carried over to the converted web page.

We have also introduced a new E-mail address widget with automatic validation of e-mail addresses. If the e-mail address is not correct, the field is considered in error and the form cannot be submitted. Just insert this widget into a cell and you can be sure every e-mail address you receive follows the rules!

Stepper widget

The new Stepper widget allows you to easily input small numeric values with just a tap or click on a button.

The worksheet is re-evaluated for each new value, making this a very useful widget when the user is trying to find an optimum value.

Send a copy of a form to the Form Submitter

When you use our Free or Advanced Submit Service, the form’s contents are sent in an e-mail to a predefined e-mail address that we call the Form Recipient.

We can also automatically send an additional copy of the form to the person that submitted it. We call this the Form Submitter e-mail address, but you can actually pick any valid e-mail address from any cell in the spreadsheet for this second copy of the submitted form.

You can also change the Subject of both e-mails, typically based on text from one or more cells in the spreadsheet:

="Survey response for " & survey_title & " from " & full_name

This is an old feature that has found a new and much more visible home on the Configure Submit settings page.

Other enhancements in version 9

The new version 9 comes with hundreds of other minor enhancements.

New Settings management

We have totally changed the way you handle the settings on the workbook level and on the system level.

Translation management

It’s easier than ever to create web pages in other languages than English, or to adjust the standard English texts to your liking. Read more on the Translation Overview help page.

Google API key

We have made it much simpler to provide the required Google API key when using Google Maps in your converted web pages. Just enter your Google API key on the Workbook tab in the task pane and it will be used for all Google Maps you create.

Miscellaneous

  • Version 9 organizes the widgets in new and more comprehensive widget categories.
  • The free trial period has been extended from 30 to 37 days, 7 free days with 30 more days after registration.

Conversion Notes

Save a backup copy of your old spreadsheets

Version 9 is not fully backward compatible with previous versions. If you have made extensive changes to the system or workbook settings, we recommend that you save a backup copy of each spreadsheet before you start using it with version 9. The backup can help you recover your previous settings using an older version of the program.

Many settings are not carried over

In version 9, we have moved the settings around quite a bit, to make it more obvious to you what settings apply to all spreadsheets you work with and what settings apply only to a particular workbook. Due to the complexity of these changes, many of your previous settings are not automatically carried over when you start using version 9.

You should verify the system and workbook settings for all your workbooks the first time you convert them. Your previous versions of SpreadsheetConverter remain installed after you have installed version 9, so just switch between the versions in the Excel ribbon menu to compare the version 9 settings with the settings you were previously using.

Translated texts must be copied manually

The text translation facility has been greatly extended in version 9. Unfortunately, this means that your previous translation settings will be unavailable in version 9. The solution is simple: just copy the translation settings for each workbook from the settings page in your previous version to the corresponding fields in version 9. Note that you need to do this once for each spreadsheet you have translated texts for.

The e-mail address is always validated by the E-mail widget

One of the most common and also most complex data validations is to verify that e-mail addresses are correctly written, e.g. that there is only one @ sign, that there is text on both sides of each period etc. The syntax rules for an e-mail address are far too complex to be handled with Excel Data Validation or Excel formulas.

Instead, use the Text > E-mail widget which is a standard text field with built-in validation of e-mail addresses. The field must either be empty or contain a valid e-mail address. If the e-mail address has an incorrect syntax, or if the field is empty but set as Required, the field is considered in error and the form cannot be submitted. This reduces the risk that you receive forms with missing or incorrect e-mail addresses.

The widget only validates the character string in the field; there is no live or online validation that the provided e-mail address actually exists or that someone reads the e-mails sent to it.

Some charts are better in their HTML5 implementation

We are very proud of our new interactive chart engine, and most charts will indeed look much better when converted with the new engine. However, our developers wish to point out that they think the radar charts still look better with the old HTML5 engine.

Some new features require the Professional edition

SpreadsheetConverter comes in two editions, Standard and Professional. Some new features may first be made available for the Professional edition. In version 9, you need a Professional edition license to use interactive charts, the WordPress plugin and Secure login for Node.js.
